Have you ever thought about those that press through in spite of the odds?
How about this little fella?
He had my heart racing as I watched him fight for his life. Wow.
The reality is that we don’t hear about all those that quit along their journey, we hear about those that pressed through in spite of incredible odds.
I watched this section of the TED talk where Angela Lee Duckworth talks about the ingredient she found in every story of success against incredible odds. A vital ingredient that was a key to success.
It made me think about people who have put this ingredient into action, even when they had no guarantee that it would work:
I mentioned before about the artist, Carmen Herrera, who made her first sale at 89.
Or Thomas Edison who tried 10,000 times to make the lightbulb before succeeding.
How about Nelson Mandela, coming out of many years in prison and solitary confinement to become the first black prime minister of South Africa, without being bitter and revengeful, but helping to bring down Apartheid.
Or Fred Astaire, who had written about him at a screen test: “Can’t sing. Can’t act. Slightly balding. Can dance a little.”
He is now known for his amazing dancing in the film ‘Flying Down to Rio’ which has gone down in history as well as lots of other films too. You can read more about this story here.
That ingredient is what makes great stories. Let’s face it, those that do press through incredible odds build the grit, tenacity, determination and strength through that time that help be the foundations of their success.
Let’s learn from the little fella and choose not to quit!
