About Amanya IP / Anna’s Story

Anna’s teaching and training story began when she realised that IP affects everyone, not just lawyers or big companies. Through her own struggles and successes in protecting her creative work, Anna saw how IP shapes daily life, from the music we listen to, to the brands we trust. She created accessible courses to demystify IP, using real-life examples and everyday language, so anyone can understand how to protect their ideas and respect the creations of others.

Challenges & Solutions

For the general public, the main issue is a lack of understanding about what intellectual property is and how it affects everyday life.

Many people unknowingly infringe on IP rights by sharing, downloading, or using content without permission, not realising the legal and financial risks involved. There is also widespread confusion about the difference between owning a physical product and owning the rights to creative content, leading to accidental violations and missed opportunities to protect personal creations.

“IP is something that is your property that can be in many different formats such as music or art. This can be sold, gifted, stolen or borrowed by someone just like an object you own such as your stationery.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions, designs, music, literature, and art. It includes rights like copyrights, patents, trademarks, and designs.

IP is important because it helps students understand how to protect their creative work and respect others’ creations. It encourages innovation and creativity while teaching legal rights and responsibilities.

Copyright: Protects original creative works like writings, music, and art.

Patents: Protects inventions.

Trademarks: Protects brand names and logos.

Design Rights: Protects the appearance of products.

Changes in copyright law allow teachers to use copyrighted materials for educational purposes without needing permission, as long as the use is fair and for non-commercial purposes. This includes displaying web pages or quotes on interactive whiteboards.

Yes, students can use copyrighted materials under the “fair dealing” exception for educational purposes, provided the use is non-commercial and accompanied by sufficient acknowledgement.

If a student creates something valuable, like an invention or a design, they should check their school’s IP policy. They might be entitled to benefits if their creation is commercially successful, depending on the school, college or university’s policies.

Students can protect their IP by understanding their school’s IP policy, keeping records of their creations, and considering registering their work if it’s eligible for patents or trademarks.

Yes, students can collaborate on IP projects. It’s important to define ownership and rights through written agreements before starting the project to ensure all parties understand their roles and responsibilities.
