In my latest podcast episode I am joined by James Mellor from Rainbow Trout films. He has recently been awarded the best team sports film for his film ‘Rugby Town’ which is all about Rugby League in Halifax.
The film is a documentary about the sport in the town, celebrating the 150th anniversary and is presently going to be seen on more screenings later on this year. You can see the trailer of the movie in the video version of the podcast available here:

James has set up an amazing studio with his business partner Danny in the centre of Halifax, where they provide film, photo and editing services as part of Albion Street Studios.
In this 2 part podcast, we go back to where the journey of Rainbow Trout Films all started, when James was 10 years old. We talk about his love for film and studying in London before he did work for various places including for Sky, London’s Burning, the Royal Opera House, and Last of the Summer Wine to name just a few.
James shared about the role of a film director, and the things to be aware of when using music and material from secondary sources, which is other people’s Intellectual Property.
James shares about trademarking Rainbow Trout Films and the challenges he had with his Youtube channel following setting it up.
And we discussed the whole issue of AI and how it is such a huge part of what is happening now and in the future.
James shared about the challenges of being an independent film maker, and ends up sharing his tips about IP for those that are listening. It is a really informative podcast, with lots of gems that James shares about what goes on behind the scenes of the films we watch.
Enjoy the shows!
